Lowlands
In early nineteenth century nestled throughout the low rolling hills of southern Scotland one could find over 300 distilleries. Today there are only four. Of these distilleries the life expectancy is low. The quality and style of whisky produced in the lowlands differs dramatically from that of their northern brethren. The style of the lowlands malts is softer and grassier, one could say almost cleaner. As for the quality well, one can’t say it’s bad just different, and not quite as popular as the whisky produced just over the mountains. The quality question is really a material one, “we work with what we got” is how most distillers run their premises, and the materials are definitely not of the same caliber of the north.
