The Aberlour Distillery was first built in 1826 and was run by James Gordon until 1879 when fire broke out devastating the distillery. A successful grain merchant and local banker, James Fleming took over and rebuilt the distillery a few kilometers up the Spey River. James Fleming was a true philanthropist some of his givings were: financing the town hall and the installation of street lamps. Having died in1895 his legacy help fund both a public school and hosp
ital for those that were unable to may their medical costs.
In 1898 another fire ravages the distillery and once again it was rebuilt.
The distillery changed hand a few more times until 1962 when Pernod Ricard purchased it.
About half of the production is slated for their single malt line. Abelour runs neck and neck with Glenlivet as the top selling single malts in France.
