Amarut
I love this distillery with it’s small locally handcrafted copper stills. The still designs are not a copy from a Scottish distillery but I think they got it right. The 2 wash stills and 1 spirit still each have a capacity of 5,000 litres giving the distillery the capability of producing a maximum of half a million litres annually. With the Indian climate the angels are very greedy after just 5 years the barrels are nearly half empty. The angels reportedly take between 8 – 16% annually, a huge difference from Scotland where the angels are happy with a mere 1 – 2%.
The peated barley used is from Inverness, Scotland while the non-peated barley comes from Northern India
For the past 6 years this product has been exported and is now on the local market and there is no longer enough product for the global market. The whiskies are typically 5 – 7 years in age but carry many more years. As with many small distilleries when the masses, and there are masses in India, catch on it just makes things harder for the rest of us. These are truly beautiful whiskies.
