Founded in 1892, the distillery is located near dufftown by the glenfiddich distillery.
The ruins of Balvenie castle overlook the balvenie distillery on speyside.
The castle was first built in the thirteenth century and was fought over, embattled and besieged until 1455 The King of Scotland, King James II, took the castle.
The last occupant of the castle was William Duff of Braco who died there in 1718.

William Grant bought a field beneath the shadow of the castle and laid the foundation stone for the glenfiddich distillery in the autumn of 1886. On Christmas day 1887 the spirit ran for the first time from the still, 223 gallons of glenfiddich. In 1892 William grant had erected his second distillery and in November Balvenie began to flow.
