At one point the distillery was used as a power station in the 1930’s and in 1972 a new group refurbishes the distillery and renames it Ledaig only to close 3 years later. Again production starts in 1979 but in 1982 it stops again and some of the buildings are turned into flats while others are rented to a dairy company to store cheese. But wait there’s more in 19809 production resumes once again and in 1993 Burns Stewart Distillers comes to the rescue.
The current owners have gone back to Tobermory’s roots and now produce Ledaig as a peated malt to replicate how it might have tasted before prohibition as well as Tobermory as an upeated malt. As storage is limited the spirit is transported to the mainland where it is filled and then transferred to Bunnahabbain on Isaly to rest, however in 2007 they to lay down some of the Ledaig on mull and comparison will be made soon between the casks on Isaly and those on Mull. I sense a new line of bottlings in the years to come.
